...The Iroquois Confederacy was a league of five nations, or tribes, living across what is now upper New York state during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Iroquois League, as it was also known, played a pivotal role in the fighting between the French and the British as they each tried to master North America. The Iroquois Confederacy saw a sixth nation join in 1722, bringing the total to six cooperative nations. The five original tribes were the Mohawk, the Seneca, the Onondaga, the Oneida and the Cayuga.
