Similar in shape to a butterfly, the thyroid is comprised of two lobes connected in the gland's lower half by the thyroid isthmus. Flexible yet strong, the neck supports the head and protects the neural pathways between the brain and the body. In addition to the thyroid, the neck also houses the hyoid bone, the Adam's apple (thyroid cartilage), cricoid cartilage, the external carotid artery and trachea, and several other structures.
