The ptarmigan is a large arctic and subarctic grouse with feathered feet and usually white winter plumage. The white or nearly white winter plumage turns brown in summer. A cassowary is a large bird found in the East Indies and Australia. It is smaller and stouter than the ostrich, has a kind of "horny helmet", and long sharp spines on each wing. It is a shy bird, but, just as the ostrich, a fast runner. The ostrich itself or "Struthio camelus" is the absolute running- champion among birds with a speed of some 72 kms an hour over short distances.

Decker strained a thigh muscle and neither girl was able to continue. While Budd was initally disqualified, upon further reviewing the footage, the judges reinstated her.
