...Teddy Roosevelt resigned as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy to organize a volunteer cavalry known as the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. The "Rough Riders" enlisted cowboys and college men led by Roosevelt under the command of Leonard Wood. They arrived in Cuba in time to take part in the Battle of San Juan Hill. Returning home as a war hero, Roosevelt was elected governor of New York in 1898. At age 42, Teddy Roosevelt became the youngest man to assume the U.S. presidency after President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901.
