Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Which ice cream company originated in a renovated gas station in Vermont?"
With a $5 correspondence course in ice cream-making from Penn State and a $12,000 investment, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield opened their first ice cream parlor in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. In 1979, they marked their anniversary by holding the first-ever free cone day, now an international annual celebration at every Ben & Jerry's store. The Ben & Jerry's retail chain now has about 450 shops, but most of the brand's ice cream is sold in supermarkets and convenience stores.
