...The Liberty Bell was the idea of the Pennsylvania Assembly, who had it made in 1751. Its purpose was to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1701 Charter of Privileges by William Penn. The last time the Liberty Bell rang was on February 23, 1846. It rang that day to mark George Washington's birthday. The ringing stopped because a major crack formed. Prior to this, the Liberty Bell tolled for the deaths of such historic figures as Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Source: ConstitutionCenter.org
