Hoover handily defeated his opponent in a landslide victory but the jubilation was short-lived. The stock market crash in 1929 threw the U.S. into the Great Depression, along with the rest of the world. Although he did accomplish some notable victories during his administration, it wasn't enough to solidify the public's confidence in his leadership. He lost his re-election bid to Franklin D.
