Augusta Savage Anna Mary Robertson "Grandma" Moses took up painting when she was in her seventies due to not being able to needlepoint any longer because of arthritis. Most of her paintings were done on strong cardboard. She had her first one woman show in 1940 and her second just two years later. Never in her paintings would you find despair or unhappiness. Grandma Moses passed away December 13, 1961 at the age of one hundred and one years, three months and six days.
