...The American Legion is a U.S. war veterans organization. The organization was founded on this day in 1919, in Paris, France. Veterans who served at least one day of active duty during wartime, or are serving now, are potentially eligible for membership in The American Legion. There are nearly 2 million members of The American Legion, making it the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s service organization. The organization played the leading role in drafting and passing of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, otherwise known as the "GI Bill."
