Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit in 1957, orbiting for three weeks before its batteries died, then silently for two more months before falling back into the atmosphere. It was a 23 inch diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. Sputnik completed 1,440 orbits of the Earth, and travelled a distance of about 43 million miles. The surprise success of Sputnik 1 triggered the Space Race, a part of the Cold War.

[Ans] What is the tallest man-made monument in the United States?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What is the tallest man-made monument in the United States?"

The Gateway Arch is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri. At 630 feet, it holds the title of the tallest man-made monument in the United States. It was built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States. The Arch is 75 feet taller than the Washington Monument and over twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty. The 60-foot heads carved on the face of Mount Rushmore are designed to the scale of men who would stand 465 feet tall, a height that would easily allow such giants to walk through the legs of the Arch!
