...When Woodrow Wilson ran for re-election to a second term, his campaign adopted the slogan, "He kept us out of the war." This slogan and an anti-war sentiment helped win him his second term in the 1916 election. His opponent, Charles Evans Hughes, accused Wilson of being ill-prepared to take the U.S. into World War I. Ironically, within a year, Wilson had no other option than to enter WWI. While most Americans sided with the British in the conflict, they were against getting involved in the war.
