...Jonas Hanway stood in a Persian city street in the mid-1750s to watch a prince pass by. The royal gentleman used a tent-shaped structure to shield himself from the sun. Hanway thought perhaps the lower class, working Persian would enjoy protection from the sun so he had a large number of these tent-shaped structures, called Hanways, produced. Unfortunately, his hanway, called umbrella locally, was an Eastern symbol for royalty and power. He had no choice but to make a hasty retreat from the country. When he got back to England, he realized an umbrella could protect the user from the English rain, so he began carrying one about London.
