Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What was the first state added to the U.S. after the original 13 colonies?"
With the founding of the United States, the thirteen original colonies became the first thirteen states. Over time 37 more states were added to the Union. Vermont became the first state added to the Union following the 13 colonies on March 1, 1791. The name of the state is derived from “montagne verte”, which is French for green mountain. Today, Vermont’s mountains are a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. It is the country’s leading producer of maple syrup and is the home of the popular Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
