...Marcus L. Urann was a lawyer by trade but he left the legal profession early in the 20th century to buy a cranberry bog. Cranberries are only harvested between mid-September and mid-November, making them available fresh for only about two months. Urann wanted to devise a way to make them available year-round. Canning them offered the solution to the problem. The man who gave us the Thanksgiving staple that keeps the shape of the can it came from died in 1963. Source: SmithsonianMag.com
