Due to poor design it was used as a prisoner of war camp. On May 22, 1938 almost 800 men attempted to flee the prison. Records show that 585 men were rearrested, and over 200 died during the attempt. Only three men are known to have made it to the French border. To honor the Republican prisoners who died in this attempt a sculpture was erected in 1988.

Thomas Delahanty, a police officer, James Brady, the White House Press Secretary and Timothy McCarthy, a Secret Service agent, were also all wounded in the assassination attempt. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a mental hospital. Hinckley was obsessed with actress Jodie Foster after seeing her in the movie "Taxi Driver". This was just one way of trying to get her attention. She was not impressed.

However a scuffle broke out between the Spanish and a local chieftain called Lapu Lapu who tried to protect his way of life. In the ensuing struggle, Magellan was killed but his crew completed the journey back to Spain. Thus the first circumnavigation of the world had been completed.
