John Landy May 1954: Brasher and Chataway were friends of Bannister, and he employed them to set the early pace and ensure that he ran the first 3/4 of a mile fast enough. The Australian John Landy was Bannister's main rival, the other man who experts believed was capable of beating the four minute barrier. Indeed he did so less than a month later. The two men met at the British Empire Games in July of that year in what was billed as the "Mile of the Century". Bannister won, confirming his position as world number one. Astonishingly, Bannister achieved all this while undertaking full-time medical studies at Oxford University. He later became a respected neurologist.
