Eastern cultures use ambergris as a spice but it is most known for stabilizing the scent of fine, expensive perfumes in Western cultures. Ambergris is a waxy, solid substance that originates in the intestines of a sperm whale. Unable to digest the ambergris, the sperm whale regurgitates it into the surrounding sea. With exposure to sunlight, air and seawater, it hardens into lumps and fades to a light gray or yellow color. It also develops a subtle, pleasant fragrance. It washes up on shorelines of China, Africa, Japan, the Americas and the Bahamas. Source: Britannica.com
