[Answer] 2. Which of the following South American animals is most closely related to the American alligator?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "2. Which of the following South American animals is most closely related to the American alligator?"

...1. Abronia lizard 2. Green iguana 3. Black caiman 4. Turnip-tailed gecko All options all reptiles found in South America, but it is the caimans who belong to the family Alligatoridae whose only other family member is American alligators. There are several varieties of caiman, also spelt cayman, but the black caiman is the largest and can grow to lengths of 15 ft (4.5m). At one time this animal was very numerous but was hunted almost to the point of extinction for its valuable hide. The darker color of the black caiman absorbs heat as well as providing camouflage while this deadly carnivore is hunting. The other options are all smaller lizards found in the rainforests who are all fighting their own wars against loss of habitat.

[Ans] Which feature is the determining factor in an alligator embryo's gender development?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Which feature is the determining factor in an alligator embryo's gender development?"

...An embryo is an early stage of development of a multicellular diploid eukaryotic organism. In general, in organisms that reproduce sexually, an embryo develops from a zygote, the single cell resulting from the fertilization of the female egg cell by the male sperm cell. The zygote possesses half the DNA of each of its two parents. In plants, animals, and some protists, the zygote will begin to divide by mitosis to produce a multicellular organism. The result of this process is an embryo.

Step 2 : Answer to the question "Which feature is the determining factor in an alligator embryo's gender development?"

Egg temperature:

Description: Alligators, along with some lizards and turtles, do not have sex-determining chromosomes in their genes. It is egg temperature during incubation that actually determines the sex of the offspring. Eggs incubated at 86F will all hatch female offspring. Incubating eggs at 93.2F will result in all male offspring. If the mother builds her nest in a sunlit area, the babies will probably be male. If the nest is in a shady area, the offspring will likely be female. Source: ChicagoTribune.com
