The song rose to number one on the US Country charts in 1968, where it stayed for three weeks. It crossed over and rose to number nineteen on the US Pop chart. It reached number one in the UK in 1975 when the record was finally released there. The song has been heard in several movies such as "Five Easy Pieces", "The Blues Brothers", "The Crying Game", "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral". Virginia Wynette Pugh (Tammy Wynette) was born in Mississippi in 1942 and is one of the most successful female country and western singers. She has won many, many Awards including Grammys, and she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. She has also been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Some of her number one hits are "I Don't Wanna Play House" "Take Me to Your World", "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", "Singing My Song" and "The Ways to Love a Man". She died in April 1998, age 55 years.
