...British novelist Richard Adams penned his first novel, "Watership Down," in the 1970s. This tale of rabbits who find adventure in a perilous pastoral setting became one of the world's best-loved books. It eventually sold millions of copies in 18 different languages. Mr. Adams made up stories about rabbits to amuse his two daughters during long drives in the country. He worked most of his life as a civil servant in London before be began turning his stories in a children's book. He was 50 at the time and it took two years to produce the book.
