John Cosnett Chris Barnard used the heart of a young woman who had been killed in a motor accident to transplant into Louis Washkansky. The operation lasted five hours and was successful. Washkansky developed a lung infection and died of pneumonia 18 days later. The second transplant was performed only a month later and the patient survived for almost two years.
