...Semana Santa is one of Costa Rica's most important religious celebrations. The holiday festivities extend for the entire week leading up to Easter Sunday. Schools close, and most people are off from work for the whole week. The government stepped up to make Thursday and Friday of Easter week mandated holidays. This gives families time to spend together during the religious celebrations. This Holy Week is an important time for the Catholics who make up 75 percent of the country's population.
