...The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands became a U.S. territory in 1975. Its first constitutional government took office in 1978. There are three inhabited principal islands in the Commonwealth: Saipan, Rota and Tinian. The 300-mile archipelago is found just north of Guam. The population of U.S. citizens are mostly of Chamorro cultural background with a number of immigrants settling on the islands over the years.
