The Pinto, produced between 1971–80, was plagued by safety concerns, particularly the revelation that the Pinto’s gas tank was capable of exploding during a rear impact scared buyers away. The problem defined the Pinto, which became the butt of countless jokes. After several lawsuits, Ford initiated a nationwide recall to fix the problem but the damage was already done. Ford stopped production of the Pinto in 1980.
