...In June of 1919, British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown made the first nonstop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Ireland. Back then, there were no airports, just a field from which the Vickers Vimy (their airplane) took off. Theirs was the first nonstop transatlantic flight, but not the first transatlantic flight: A U.S. Navy seaplane had flown from Newfoundland to Portugal in May of that year, with a 10-day stop in the Azores.
