...On Aug. 9, 1945, Maj. Gen. Charles W. Sweeney piloted the B-29 Superfortress "Bockscar" over Japan. Its mission was to drop the second of two atomic bombs on the island nation. Smoke obscured the original primary target city of Kokura. Unable to verify the target, Sweeney turned the "Bockscar" toward the secondary target, the city of Nagasaki.
