Zack begins a relationship with a local girl named Paula (Debra Winger), but only intends it to be something to pass the time. Meanwhile, Sid becomes serious about his girlfriend Lynette (Lisa Blount), after she thinks she's pregnant, and drops out of flight school to marry her and go back home. But he's later devastated to learn that she only wanted to marry him if he became a naval officer.
