Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were both former presidents, members of the original American Revolutionaries, and friends. Jefferson served as Adams's vice president before his own election to the top office. It was during Adam's administration, and through a bitter campaign which Jefferson won, that the two men's friendship turned adversarial. They were able to mend their division later, corresponding for the final 14 years of their lives. Both died, Jefferson five hours before Adams, on July 4, 1826. Source: History.com
