Oedipus killed his father, Laius, in a roadside quarrel. By solving the riddle of the Sphinx he won the throne of Thebes and unknowingly married Queen Jocasta, his own widowed mother. When Jocasta discovered the truth, she committed suicide and Oedipus blinded himself and went into exile.
