Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What did Americans call hamburgers during Word War I?"

...Another version of the creation of the hamburger is that of German cook Otto Kuasw, who created a very popular sailors' sandwich made of a fillet of beef patty fried in butter, served with a fried egg, between two toasted buns in 1891, at a post in Hamburg, Germany. History of the hamburger ......

How long does it take to make hamburgers on the grill?

Grill the Burgers: Grill the burgers for 2 minutes on each side, then move them to a lower-heat area of the grill. Cook another 2-3 minutes for medium-rare burgers, 3-4 minutes for medium, or 5-6 minutes for well-done burgers

Step 2 : Answer to the question "What did Americans call hamburgers during Word War I?"

"Liberty Steaks":

When war broke out with Germany in 1917, a wave of anti-German hysteria swept across the country, and everyone was eager to distance themselves from German loyalties. The names of German foods were purged from restaurant menus; sauerkraut had been renamed “liberty cabbage,” while hamburgers became “liberty steaks”. Frankfurters, obviously a very German name, was deemed unacceptable during World War I. In some places they were called “liberty sausages,” but it was another term that stuck—the hot dog.

[Ans] Hamburgers originated in this country

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Hamburgers originated in this country"

There have been many claims about the origin of the hamburger, but the origins remain unclear. The popular book "The Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy" by Hannah Glasse included a recipe in 1758 as "Hamburgh sausage", which suggested to serve it "roasted with toasted bread under it". A similar snack was also popular in Hamburg by the name "Rundstück warm" ("bread roll warm") in 1869 or earlier,[5] and supposedly eaten by many emigrants on their way to America, but may have contained roasted beefsteak rather than Frikadeller. Hamburg steak is reported to have been served between two pieces of bread on the Hamburg America Line, which began operations in 1847. Each of these may mark the invention of the Hamburger, and explain the name.

Step 2 : Answer to the question "Hamburgers originated in this country"

United States:

There is a reference to a "Hamburg steak" as early as 1884 in the Boston Journal.[OED, under "steak"] On July 5, 1896, the Chicago Daily Tribune made a highly specific claim regarding a "hamburger sandwich" in an article about a "Sandwich Car": "A distinguished favorite, only five cents, is Hamburger steak sandwich, the meat for which is kept ready in small patties and 'cooked while you wait' on the gasoline range.
