It runs from the country of Guinea westward to the Atlantic Ocean. Only about half of the river is navigable and runs right through the center of the country. The country of The Gambia is very small and consists of little more than the river and the banks on either side. The Gambia is only about 4,000 sq mi and water covers over 10% of the country.
