Step 1 : Introduction to the question "6. Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" was rewritten for Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. The original lyrics developed out of writer Bernie Taupin's teenage pre-occupation with which screen legend?"

...1. Judy Garland 2. Charlie Chaplin 3. James Dean 4. Marilyn Monroe "Goodbye Norma Jean Though I never knew you at all You had the grace to hold yourself While those around you crawled They crawled out of the woodwork And they whispered into your brain They set you on the treadmill And they made you change your name" The song is about Norma Jeane Mortenson aka Norma Jeane Baker, whose name was changed to Marilyn Monroe. Curiously, three different versions of the song have charted for Elton in the UK. The original, taken from the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album, reached Number 11 in 1974. It wasn't released in the US. A live version was issued in 1987, reaching Number 5 in the UK and Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Finally, the 1997 version reached Number 1 in both countries. In the rewritten lyrics, dedicated to Princess Diana and sung at her funeral, the words became: "Goodbye England's rose; may you ever grow in our hearts. You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart. You called out to our country, and you whispered to those in pain. Now you belong to heaven, and the stars spell out your name."
