...July 17, 1955 saw nearly half of the U.S. population glued to their black-and-white televisions for the opening day of Disneyland. It took two decades of planning and a hectic, breakneck year of construction to transform 160 acres of orange grove into the $17 million theme park. Those financing Walt Disney's dream - bankers and his brother Roy - feared the project was a sure bet for financial ruin. Many went so far as to call it "Walt's folly."
