...After Washington set up a siege of Yorktown, General Lord Charles Cornwallis sent a letter on October 17, 1781, to Washington asking for terms of surrender. General Washington happily informed the Continental Congress of Cornwallis's surrender on October 19. Cornwallis surrendered over 8,000 British soldiers and seaman to Washington's combined American and French force at Yorktown, Virginia.
