Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What does China celebrate with its Teng Chieh Festival?"
On Halloween night in China, photographs of departed family members are on display. Food and water offerings go in front of the photographs, and lanterns and bonfires are lit. These serve to light the way for spirits who travel the Earth on Halloween night. Members of Buddhist temples construct paper "boats of the law" on Halloween night, some of them quite large. Burning these is an act of remembrance of the dead. It is also believed this custom frees the spirits of those who died because of accidents or drowning, and were never buried. Source: Novareinna.com
