He would grow into an amazing athlete but excelled in football. An early football game was a mashup of rugby and soccer rules. The modern game of North American football came about because of rules changes credited to Camp. The influence of Walter Camp manifests in the use of down, line of scrimmage, the point system, the number of players allowed and the creation of the quarterback position.
