Amazon was originally named "Cadabra." It was intended as a reference to the word "abracadabra" (as in, magic). Bezos later changed the name to Amazon.com, Inc. after a lawyer misheard its original name as "cadaver". He selected the name Amazon by looking through the dictionary. When he landed on the word "Amazon," the name of the largest river on the planet, he decided that was the perfect name for what would become the world’s largest bookstore.
