The market first existed as an unofficial meat market 1217, though at the time it was known as Mercat de la Palla (the Straw Market). It wasn't until 1826 that the market was legalized, and in 1853, the official site of La Boqueria opened in la Rambla, the heart of Barcelona, serving up anything and everything locals could want. Today, over 200 stalls sell their wares here, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive markets in Europe.
