...On July 14, 1789, France was gripped in the throes of a revolution that began just two days before. The Bastille Fortress in Paris was overrun by a mob. This storming of the Bastille is commemorated by Bastille Day. At the time, the Bastille housed political prisoners but was also holding stockpiles of weapons. The French people overrunning the Bastille took gunpowder and arms. They also relieved the prison's governor of his head.
