...The Centers for Disease Control and Protection observes U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week annually. In 2018 the designated week for this program initiative is Nov. 12-18. The purpose of the observance is to emphasize common steps everyone can take to improve the responsible use and prescribing of antibiotics. Using antibiotics can save lives but are unnecessary in about 30 percent of cases. This can lead to unpleasant side effects and antibiotic resistance. Organisms resistant to antibiotics are extremely hard to rid from the body, making this resistance to antibiotics one of the more urgent threats to public health, not just in the U.S. but globally.
