After a long battle with throat cancer, William Hanna died on on March 22, 2001 in North Hollywood, California and was laid to rest in Ascension Cemetery. Animator Walter Lantz also died on March 22, in 1994. He created "Woody Woopecker", which his wife Gracie Lantz voiced.
