...Ralph Joseph Bunche received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, in 1950. As a U.S. diplomat, Bunche served in the Office of Strategic Services and in the U.S. State Department during the 1940s. He accepted an appointment to the United Nations in 1947. There he served on a special committee tasked with seeking an end to the rising crisis brewing over Israel's movement toward independence. For his efforts in mediation toward peace in the first Arab-Israeli war, Ralph Joseph Bunche became the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche died in 1971.
