This was disputed by Harald Hardrada of Norway and William of Normandy, who both prepared to invade, one from the north and the other from the south. Harold remained in the south, prepared to repel William, but had to move his army north quickly when York fell to Harald. The Vikings were defeated on 25 September 1066, but William had taken advantage of Harold's absence and Harold, with his army depleted, was killed on October 14th.
