...Cable News Network (CNN) debuted at 6 p.m. EST from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. It was June 1, 1980. The lead story of the debut show covered an assassination attempt against civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. With its debut, CNN ended the unspoken rule that news could only be reported during certain fixed hours of the day. It was initially available in less than two million U.S. households.
