Step 1 : Introduction to the question " Why did American actor Christopher Reeve spend the last years of his life in a wheelchair? "
...
Christopher D'Olier Reeve (September 25, 1952 – October 10, 2004) was an American actor, activist, director, and author. He amassed several stage and screen credits in his 34-year career, including playing the title character in the Superman film series (1978–1987). He won a British Academy Film Award, an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He was also known for his activism.
He had purchased a thoroughbred horse and was training for dressage horse shows. His horse refused a jump and Reeve fell forward, landing on his head and shattering the first and second vertebrae in his neck. This left him paralyzed from the neck down and was unable to breathe until paramedics arrived three minutes later. He had no recall of the accident.
Despite being confined to a wheelchair and needing a respirator to assist with his breathing, he became heavily involved in campaigns supporting handicapped children and paraplegics, testifying before a Senate subcommittee in favor of federal funding for stem cell research.
Reeve continued to work after ongoing rehabilitation. He returned to acting in a television production of Rear Window (1998), for which he picked up a Golden Globe nomination, and directed two television films with health themes. Reeve also penned two autobiographical books, Still Me (1998) and Nothing is Impossible: Reflections on a New Life (2002).
