Step 1 : Introduction to the question " What is it called when a star explodes? "
...
A nova occurs when a large star has used up its lighter elements starting with hydrogen, then helium and so on. As heavier elements are used it becomes more difficult for the star to maintain its diameter. Eventually, the star begins to collapse with the speed increasing exponentially. All the material collapses inward until the neutron barrier is encountered. At that point, the rebound is so violent it appears to be a massive explosion as the star throws off a substantial part of its remaining material. This is how heavier elements become mixed with the gasses and dust and these give rise to new stars and planets. Our bodies are also made of this star dust. The remnants of the Nova may form a dwarf star. If the stay was huge, it results in a Supernova which would then be a neutron star.
