Step 1 : Introduction to the question " What does Popeye the Sailor Man consume to gain super strength? "
...
Popeye the Sailor Man was created by Elzie Crisler Segar and made his first appearance in the comic strip "Thimble Theater" in 1929. Though initially introduced as a minor supporting character, Popeye's popularity quickly rose with the strip reader, eventually becoming the strip's main character in 1931. This led to Max Fleischer opting to adapt the strip into a series of animated short films for Paramount Pictures. These animated shorts became highly popular with audiences throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Paramount would continue to produce these shorts until 1957.
One of Popeye's most notable traits would be the super strength he gains from consuming canned spinach. Initially, Popeye gained this strength and resilience by rubbing the head of a magical chicken; however, in 1932, the strip writers chose to make spinach the source of the superhuman abilities. This quickly became a defining trait of the character, with his catch phrase eventually becoming "I'm strong to the finich 'Cause I eats me spinach".
This change was spurred by the ongoing Great Depression, when the government was promoting the iron-rich vegetable as a replacement for meat products and saw Popeye as a promising way of doing so. This would cause a massive increase in spinach consumption in the United States, with some sources reporting an increase as high as 33%.
