During his rule he was known for his lavish lifestyle while his people lived in squalor. Haiti was considered the poorest country in the Americas during his regime. Duvalier made millions of dollars selling the body parts of dead Haitians and through his involvement in the drug trade. After being forced out of office and told to "Hit the road, Jack", he moved to France, where he was allowed to live even though he was denied political asylum. While living in France he lost most of his wealth after a divorce from his wife Michele Bennett. In January of 2011, Baby Doc returned to Haiti, where he was promptly arrested and charged with theft, corruption and misappropriation of funds.
