The original fortress was built under the rule of the Ogasawara clan in 1504 and was originally called Fukashi Castle. After the castle came under the rule of a new clan, the new palace was completed by 1594. Today, it is the site of the Taiko Drum Festival and a Takigi Noh (a play performed by firelight), and a popular place to witness the arrival of the cherry blossoms in April.:
