Laos - According to local Laotian legend, the large stone jars scattered across this field in the country's highlands were built by the king of the ancient giants so that he could brew rice wine. Each jar is between 3 and 10 feet tall, and some weigh as much as 14 tons. Few people outside of Laos knew of the ruins until the 1930s, when the site was excavated by a team of French archaeologists. They believe the jars are possibly 2,000 years old and may have been used for storing food or as funeral urns. Experts are hoping that the site will gain UNESCO World Heritage status.:
